Fashion from former prez
AFTER having been honoured by designer David Tlale during Johannesburg fashion week in February, South Africa’s former president, Nelson Mandela, is starting his own fashion line.
Supporting his 46664 Foundation, the apparel range will feature men’s and women’s styles and will make its debut at a dedicated concept store in Johannesburg in August. The designs will be rolled out at selected South African retailers first and then internationally by next year, with an online shop also in the works.
“46664 has evolved to become much more than a global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaign,” foundation board member Achmat Dangor commented at the recent launch.

“The work of the organisation encompasses Mr Mandela’s humanitarian legacy as well as confronting and inspiring action to address the broader social injustices in our society.
“To do this effectively, 46664 needs reliable and sustainable income streams, something we believe that 46664 Apparel can significantly contribute to.”
There is no word yet on inspirations behind the clothes or price details, but the range has been described as “fashion-forward, yet truly wearable”. Both national and international guest designers are expected to launch capsule ranges with the brand.
