Spanish fashion: The new Mango store inside Gibbons Company

Spanish fashion brand Mango has opened an outlet in Bermuda, inside the Gibbons Company department store.

The fast-growing chain opened more than one store per day around the world last year, seven in Spain and 373 elsewhere and recorded sales (excluding sales tax) of 1.58 billion euros during the last financial year.

The 753 sq ft area inside the Reid Street store will sell women’s clothing.

Jose Gomez, Mango’s senior vice-president of business development, told The Royal Gazette in an interview: “The aim of our company is to have a store in every country of the world.

“Bermuda is a beautiful place with a stable population interested in fashion and there are many international businesses already there.

“We wanted to be in Bermuda, but we were just looking for the right partner.”

After meeting a representative of Gibbons Company at a retailers’ show in the US, the deal was done.

The “store within a store” will be operated under a franchise agreement that allows Mango added control over presentation than they would have from just selling the clothes.

“The reason is that we want all of shoppers in 103 countries to have the same experience, the same thing replicated throughout the world,” Mr Gomez said.

The Barcelona-based company started out by aiming its designs at women aged 18 to 30, but has evolved to have no target age group.

Mr Gomez added that after a soft launch, the initial two weeks had brought sales that exceeded expectations.

“We’ve been unbelievably well received by customers,” he said. “There’s high awareness of the mango brand in Bermuda.”

Mango has about 10,000 employees working in 2,000 stores around the world, including Caribbean region outlets in Aruba, Curacao, Cuba, Panama, Santo Domingo, Costa Rica and Guatemala. The chain aims to open 550 more stores in 2011 in countries including Guadeloupe, Monaco, Cambodia, Angola, Ghana and Yemen.

Gibbons Company will stage a launch party on Friday for the new store at 21 Reid Street, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
